Alpha-1 Association of Australia (AAA)

What is the AAA?

The Alpha-1 Association of Australia (AAA) is an organisation dedicated to the help and support of Australians who are affected by and interested in Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, (commonly abbreviated to A1AD or AATD). The Alpha-1 Association of Australia, known as the AAA, was established on 15 June 2005. It is non-profit Health Promotion Charity, endorsed as such by the Australian Taxation Office. The AAA was established following recognition of the absence of a central body of information and contacts for those affected by and working with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (commonly abbreviated to A1AD or AATD). A1AD is a genetically inherited medical condition which can affect the liver and lungs. The AAA has produced a foldable brochure which contains more detail about the condition.

Vision and Mission

The Vision To see Australia free of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, The Mission The focus of AAA is to raise awareness of this genetic condition so more funds can be raisd for research to bring prevention of this disease ever closer, also to improve AAT outcomes leading to substantial improvements to the quality of life for people with AAT. The Association's objectives include:-

To act as an instigator of and catalyst for initiatives which ultimately benefit those affected by A1AD in Australia.
To promote the prevention and control of symptoms associated with the medical condition known as A1AD in Australia.
To promote awareness of A1AD in Australia.
To act as a support group for patients, and the families of patients, affected by A1AD in Australia.
To act as a centralised knowledgebase of information about A1AD issues as they pertain to Australia; and
To raise funds to enable achievement of the Association's objectives.

AAA Programs and Services

Some of the tasks adopted by the Alpha-1 Association of Australia (AAA) include:

Help and support for sufferers of A1AD and family members of these sufferers.
Research into the condition with the ultimate aim of curing the disease sponsored by various pharmaceutical companies and other institutions.
Distribution of educational brochures and other forms of literature about A1AD.
Compiling a register of sufferers for support, education and research
