Your Guide to Prostate Cancer - 2nd Edition
Prostate cancer sufferers, as well as friends and family, now have access to a simple yet comprehensive guide to the condition with the release of the fully revised, second edition of the highly successful; "Your Guide to Prostate Cancer - the disease, treatment options and outcomes" written by Dr Prem Rashid, Consultant Urologist and UNSW Conjoint Senior Lecturer.
Written for men from all walks of life, "Your Guide to Prostate Cancer" has already become the benchmark reference for men throughout Australia and New Zealand. The book employs a straightforward approach to answering a broad range of questions relating to prostate cancer and uses clear, concise language to explain what can be a complicated and confusing journey for many men. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the book, through the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, will be donated to the Foundation.
Almost one in ten Australian men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. Every year, over 11,000 Australian men are diagnosed (45 per day) and more than 3,000 die (9 per day) from this disease. This makes prostate cancer equivalent in incidence and mortality to breast cancer. Once considered a disease of elderly men, it is now commonly recognised that all Australian men over the age of 50 must understand the significance of prostate cancer as a personal health risk in order to make an informed decision about testing and treatment.
"Your Guide to Prostate Cancer" aims to reduce common feelings of uncertainty regarding the disease, testing and treatment options, by providing an in depth review of essential issues. The book endeavours to alter men's understanding of prostate cancer from total ignorance to a level where they are equipped with sufficient information to make informed decisions. "Your Guide to Prostate Cancer" is an in depth yet easy to follow guide designed to be read by men from all walks of life.
"The book also includes invaluable interviews with men who have suffered from the disease and who have given an open and honest account of their experience. It is a real honour to be given such an intimate account on dealing with prostate cancer and I sincerely hope that these persons' stories will assist others in coping with the disease" said Dr Rashid.
The late Max Gardner AM, and former National Chairman of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia agreed that the inclusion of thirteen case studies was invaluable, providing almost every personal aspect of diagnosis and treatment one is likely to encounter.
"The personal stories are obviously told through the eyes and in the words of actual patients and are therefore a veritable goldmine of experience that helps put the technical content of the book into better perspective for any patient grappling with balancing medical recommendations with personal circumstances", said the late Mr Gardner of the first edition of this book.
Any reader who is newly diagnosed or is just beginning to evaluate the subject of prostate cancer will find most of the answers that they are seeking in this fully revised second edition. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia advocates that men must first and foremost understand the seriousness of this condition and then make an informed decision about their next actions. While discussion of treatment is inclusive and fully up to date, the book is unique in that the reader is given the most comprehensive summary of dietary and lifestyle issues to be found in any Australian text.
"It is a brave and long awaited initiative for which Dr Rashid is to be congratulated," added the late Max Gardner in his review for The Prostate News Bulletin.
Topics covered in the book include: - Outline of prostate cancer and possible causes - Risk of encountering the disease - Prostate cancer diagnosis including the PSA test, biopsy, Gleason score, the Jewett and TNM systems - Current treatment options including nerve sparing, nerve grafting issues, laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
