Can anyone help with my newly-diagnosed lactose intolerance?

An Allergy is a condition in which the body has an exaggerated and inappropriate immune response to a substance (eg food or medicine).

Allergic reactions are due to the production of antibodies by the body's immune system against specific substances which are normally harmless to the majority of people. (allergens, e.g. pollen, dust mites, animal dander).

Can anyone help with my newly-diagnosed lactose intolerance?

Postby mariem on Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:33 pm

I travelled to China on a short holiday with my girlfriends last year and ate something that caused me to become lactose intolerant.

I am so upset because as a lover of everything dairy, I am finding it very difficult adjusting to life without my cheesy-treats and late-night choc milks.

I spend HOURS at the supermarket sifting through products to make sure I'm not about to buy something that's going to make me ill. It's SO frustrating. I'm already devastated that I can't eat any of my favourite foods anymore, and now I've been reduced to eating these wheat-free, yeast-free, lactose-free and COMPLETELY FLAVOUR-FREE speciality foods which really don't tickle my fancy.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I understand that this sort of thing happens to people quite often, so I've got my fingers crossed that there's someone out there in the same situation that might have a few pointers?

Hey Mariem,

I am also Lactose Intolerant. I happened to come across a brochure at my local GP clinic last week regarding a new website that has helped me immensely, and that i think can also help you. The website is called http://www.eatingsafe.com. Basically, it has the nutritional labels of all the products in the supermarket online! The great thing is that i can find out which products contain dairy or lactose in a matter of seconds. From my understanding, it somehow goes through all of the ingredients of products, and highlights the products which contain or may contain diary ingredients. It is all pretty easy to understand - they use a traffic light system to indicate the presence of certain allergens (Red = contains lactose). I don't know about you, but on my weekly trip to the supermarket, i always feel so limited in regards to what i can and can't eat. I have used this website for a week so far, and i feel as though my choice of foods and range of diet has seriously expanded! This website is such a time-saver. I highly recommend it.

These pages cover lactose intolerance and the nutritional difficulties that can accompany the illness.

(And unlike most websites the information is legit, and written by medical professionals!)

Hope this helps you. :)

If you would consult a health specialist, he'll tell you not to deprive yourself from your favorite food just because you're lactose intolerant. He's going to advise you to take in a very small amount just to help you get over from the craving. Everything in moderation won't kill.

hi have a alergy to soy also and have been reading some horrific stories about Soy Protein Isolate and the way it is manufactured. I find it is now added to a lot of soy products could that be the problem rather than just soy
