problems with eyes

As men's health issues are diverse, many disciplines of medicine deal with the diagnosis and treatment of men's diseases. Prostate cancer, testicular problems, stroke, diabetes and heart disease are just some of the many issues men may have to face. For material about Men's social or physical health, discuss here.

problems with eyes

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, but wanted to seek your advice.

Roughly two years ago, I went to a rave which for the first time I experimented with the drug "acid" (not sure if that's the proper term). For starters It was the most f*cked up experience i've ever been through, and never again will I touch that drug.

Anyway, the next morning I was ok, however I felt almost like my eyes were a bit strange. I've used other drugs in the past, so I thought maybe it was still the drug in my system, and I thought nothing of it. Also, I was staring at the lasers alot..

Two years on, I still have that same unusual feeling in my eyes, and it's only now I think I know what it is. I was reading a book the other day, and only then it hit me, that I cannot see anything else apart from what I am immediately looking at. Like, I can be looking at a word, but it's only that word I can see, and everything else is blury. I've asked people (to confirm to me) that when they look at a book, they can still see the surrounding words without actually looking as them... but I can't.

I did some research and I think it might be peripheral vision. Please correct me if i'm wrong. I really regret that night because my vision is not what it used to be. It hasn't got worse, but it's something I really want do something about. I've been too affraid to go see a doc about, but now I think I have to.

Is there something that can be done about this? What are my options? Please help.

Paul.

Peripheral Vision Deterioration.

Postby dr_garcias on Wed Jun 27, 2007 9:57 pm

LSD or (acid) is an illegal asemisynthetic psychedelic drug.

I am surpised that it has taken you 2 years to become aware of the specifity of your eyesight problem, and whether it is due to the drug, the lights or some other factor only a doctor can tell you.

Vision is foveal or peripheral, peripheral vision is used for organizing the broad spatial scene and foveal is used for concentrating on specific things.

Individuals with loss of peripheral vision can sometimes get something called tunnel vision.
But that tends to be when you completely lose all side vision, your's doesn't seem to have deteriorated that far yet, thankfully !
Typically, an individual with loss of side vision will not automatically perceive the loss, as the areas where there is no retinal cell activity are neither light or dark. <-- perhaps this explains why it has taken so long for you to realise your symptoms.

A visit to your optometrist should highlight and confirm any problems you might have with your eyesight.
most things can be fixed or accommodated for through lenses, or even laser surgery. :)

after my checkup

Postby mrkiss on Mon Jul 16, 2007 2:16 am

Hi,

I just wanted to you let you all know that I went to my local Optomertrist as you said, told him the story, and I had a peripharal vision test done.

It came back as all normal, and with the check up, it appears my eyes are fine. I was happy about this, but i'm still not happy because there's still something going on. I've done a fair bit of research about trying to find and answer, and it's harder aswell because i've gotten so used to it that it's hard to properly explain. I really want this fixed.. I read a bit about Lens Opacity, and that being caused by Cataracts.. thinking about it, that would be a better way of explaining it. When I look straight, i can still see and it's no dramas, but it's like the picture isn't fully clear. another expample.. when you look at say a light and then away, you can't really see because the light is too strong so your eyes need to refocus (maybe something to do with visual purple?) well it's like that for me, except it doesn't go fully back to normal..

Wouldn't this of been picked up by my eye check up? I'm really fed up with it.. Worse case scenario.. I dont want to go blind..

It's not interfearing with my life really.. but sometime it gets me down because of how long it's been and wanting it to stop..

Try an opthamologist

You may find the Glaucoma Australia web page interesting.

I note that you didn't mention having been on any prescription medication, but for example, corticosteroids like prednisolone, with long term use may affect the eyes. There have been cases of my fellow RF retroperitoneal fibrosis sufferers suffering eye probs attributable to prednisolone.

To seek another opinion is reasonable. Why not ask your GP for a referral to an opthamologist.

Hi,

Thankyou for the quick reply. I had a read of the web site and that could be it. I'm not a doctor but I'll definately have to get it checked.

I've never used steroids before, of any sort, and no i'm not on any medication.

I have a question though. It said how glaucoma can be identified by a visual field assesment. I had one of these done, and the optomertrist said to me that it all seemed normal. When I had it done, there were a few times I wasn't sure if I had seen something, or I did see the light but it wasn't clear.. maybe i'm still in the early stages? as always, it's irreversable :x

The picture is showed on the site, where the vision is partly deteriorating... would you think there would be any physical changes in the eye, like maybe the outsides of the eye start loosing it's colour?

Glaucoma Doubt ?

Postby axiom66 on Thu Jul 19, 2007 3:04 am

I understand your continuing feelings of doubt. That is why I suggested you get a referral to an opthamologist.

As I recall a test for glaucoma involves & includes a peripheral vision test. Although the tests with the optometrist had a satisfactory result, personally I believed a consultation with a specialist in eye diseases may be reassuring or otherwise revealing for you. However, despite everything, the reply above (Post #5) from Forum member "dr_garcias" seemed logical, informative, sound & professionally based. But with personal key assets like eyes you sure need to certain, comfortable and fully satisfied with professional advice & opinion.

There is no substitute for face to face appropriately qualified medical opinion.

Take that next step & let us know what happens. Good luck.
