Indication of Deralin:

Propranolol is used in the treatment of:

Heart Attack.

Angina.

High Blood Pressure.

Prevention of Migraines

Abnormal heart rhythms which may be due to a number of different causes including hyperthyroidism, anxiety and medications

Dysrhythmias associated with thyrotoxicosis

Tachycardia due to anxiety

Drug induced dysrhythmias

Essential tremors including familial and senile tremors

Phaeochromocytoma

Hypertrophic subaortic stenosis

Action of Deralin:

Propranolol acts on the heart to slow the heart rate and reduce the force the heart must pump with. This reduced the heart's workload and its oxygen requirements.The mechanism by which Propranolol lowers blood pressure is unknown.

Dose advice of Deralin:

Adults:Hypertension:

The recommended initial dose is 40 mg twice daily.

This dose may be increased by 40mg at weekly intervals depending on the individual patient's response.

The usual dose range is 120-320 mg per day.Angina Pectoris:

The recommended initial dose is 40 mg twice daily.

This dose may be increased by 40mg at weekly intervals depending on the individual patient's response.

The usual dose range is 120-320 mg per day.Essential tremor:

The recommended initial dose is 40 mg twice daily.

This dose may be increased by 40mg at weekly intervals depending on the individual patient's response.

The usual dose range is 80-160 mg per day.Migraine:

The recommended initial dose is 40 mg twice daily.

This dose may be increased by 40mg at weekly intervals depending on the individual patient's response.

The usual dose range is 80-160 mg per day and a clinical response should be evident within three months of commencing treatment.

If the frequency of migraines is significantly reduced therapy may be gradually ceased as remission may occur in some patients.Cardiac dysrhythmias, anxiety tachycardia, dysrhythmias associated with thyrotoxicosis and hypertrophic subaortic stenosis:

10-40 mg three or four times a day.Phaeochromocytoma:

Propranolol is used only in combination with an alpha-receptor blocking drug.

Preoperatively: 60 mg daily in divided doses for three days.

Maintenance dosing: 30 mg daily in divided doses.Myocardial Infarction:

Initial therapy is 40 mg four times a day for two or three days.

This may then be changed to 80 mg twice a day in order to improve patient compliance.Children:

Doses in children should be individually determined and the following doses are only a guide.Cardiac dysrhythmias:

0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg three or four times daily. Phaeochromocytoma:

0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg three or four times daily. Dysrhythmias due to thyrotoxicosis:

0.25 to 0.5 mg/kg three or four times daily. Fallot's tetralogy:

1 mg/kg repeated three or four times daily. Migraine:

Start with 10 mg once or twice daily.
