Indication of Isoptin Injection:

Verapamil is used in the treatment of:

  • Supraventricular tachycardia with AV nodal re-entry
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Atrial flutter
  • Hypertension
  • Angina

    Action of Isoptin Injection:

    Calcium channel blockers block the inward current of calcium into cells in the heart and the muscle wall of blood vessels.

    Verapamil acts mainly on the heart to reduce the force with which the heart contracts, slow the heart rate and slow electrical conduction through the heart.

    Dose Advice of Isoptin Injection:

    Arrhythmias:

    Adults:
  • An initial intravenous injection of 5mg is given over 2-3 minutes.
  • This is repeated every 5-10 minutes as required.
  • Maintenance dosing is an intravenous infusion of 5-10 mg per hour.
  • The maximum daily dose is 100 mg intravenously.
  • Oral dosing is 120-80 mg per day.

    Children:
  • An initial intravenous injection of 0.1-0.3 mg/kg to a maximum of 5
  • This can be repeated after 30 minutes or an infusion 1.25-5 micrograms/kg per minute can be started.
  • Oral dosing is 1?3 mg/kg three times a day.

    High Blood Pressure and Angina:

    Adults:
  • The initial recommended dose is 80 mg orally, 2-3 times a day.
  • This may increased up to 160 mg 2-3 times a day if short acting preparations are used or 240 mg once or twice daily if a controlled release preparation is used.
