Indication of Aldactone:
Spironolactone has a wide variety of uses. It is used to treat elevated blood pressure, to treat excessive fluid retention due to heart, liver and kidney disease, to treat low potassium levels in the body and to treat females who have excess hair production.Action of Aldactone:
Spironolactone causes increased loss of sodium and water from the kidneys and it retains potassium. For congestive heart failure the initial dose is 100 mg/day and may be gradually increased up to 200 mg/day if required.
For cirrhosis if the urinary sodium: potassium ratio is greater than one, the recommended dose is 100 mg/day but if the ratio is less than one, the recommended dose is 200 to 400 mg/day.
For nephrotic syndrome the dosing is usually 100 to 200 mg/day.
For treating diuretic induced hypokalemia when oral potassium supplements are considered inappropriate the lowest possible dose should be used and gradually titrated upwards. A dose exceeding 100 mg per day should be avoided.
For the treatment of female hirsutism 100 to 200 mg is given daily in divided doses.
