Action of Aldactone:

Spironolactone causes increased loss of sodium and water from the kidneys and it retains potassium. The increased loss of water can treat retained fluid in the body, which may manifest as swelling and can also reduce blood pressure. Spironolactone also reduces the levels of testosterone in the body, which may help in the treatment of excess hair in females.

Dose Advice of Aldactone:

For the treatment of high blood pressure 50 - 100 mg/day is given once daily or in two divided doses.

For treatment of excess fluid retention the dosage will change depending on the condition causing the fluid retention.

For congestive heart failure the initial dose is 100 mg/day and may be gradually increased up to 200 mg/day if required.

For cirrhosis if the urinary sodium: potassium ratio is greater than one, the recommended dose is 100 mg/day but if the ratio is less than one, the recommended dose is 200 to 400 mg/day.
For nephrotic syndrome the dosing is usually 100 to 200 mg/day.

For treating diuretic induced hypokalemia when oral potassium supplements are considered inappropriate the lowest possible dose should be used and gradually titrated upwards. A dose exceeding 100 mg per day should be avoided.

For the treatment of female hirsutism 100 to 200 mg is given daily in divided doses.
