Indication

Paracetamol is an analgesic and antipyretic drug. It is used for the relief of:

Action

Parecetamol treats pain and fever via uncertain mechanisms. It is not an anti inflammatory.

Dose advice

Available as tablets or syrup.

Tablets

Adults (>12 years):

  • 1-2 tablets every 3-4 hours. Max-8 per day.

Children (7-12 years):


  • 1 tablet every 3-4 hours. Max 4 per day.

Children – Syrup

  • 1-3 months (4-6 kg): 2-4 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 3-6 months (6-8 kg): 4-5 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 6-12 months (8-10 kg): 5-6 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 1-2 years (10-12 kg): 6-8 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 2-4 years (12-16 kg): 8-10 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 4-6 years (16-20 kg): 10-13 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 6-8 years (20-25 kg): 13-16 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 8-10 years (25-32 kg): 16-20 mL every 3-4 hours
  • 10-12 years (32-41 kg): 20-26 mL every 3-4 hours
  • Avoid if experienced allergic reactions in past to parecetemol.
  • Not for infants less than 1 month.
  • Seek appropriate medical advice if uncertain.

Schedule

Tablets, Tabsules, Capseals: 4’s, 12’s, 24’s: Unscheduled; 96’s, 250’s: S2

Common side effects

  • None
  • Overdose symptoms are important as excess parecetamol can cause liver damage and be potentially fatal. Symptoms develop within the first two days and include vomiting, abdominal pain, low blood pressure and sweating.
  • In cases of overdosage, immediately telephone the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 or seek appropriate medical help.

Uncommon side effects

Possible allergic reactions and nausea.

Seek medical advice immediately if any of the above are suspected.
