Indication of Morphine Sulfate Injection:

Morphine is indicated in for the following:
  • Relief of moderate to severe acute and chronic pain.
  • Cough suppression.
  • Relief of severe shortness of breathing in patients with lung cancer.
  • Treatment of pulmonary oedema.
  • Treatment of diarrhoea.

    Action of Morphine Sulfate Injection:

    Morphine is an opioid medication.

    Opioids act on opioid receptors in the nervous system to reduce the sensation of pain.

    As well as relieving pain, Morphine also decreases breathing and causes constipation.

    Dose Advice of Morphine Sulfate Injection:

    Adults:

  • The initial recommended dose is 10 mg given subcutaneously or intramuscularly.
  • The usual dose ranges from 5 - 20 mg every four hours as required depending on the patient's response.

    Children:

  • The initial recommended dose is 0.10 to 0.20 mg/kg bodyweight given subcutaneously.
  • This may be increased to a maximum of 15 mg/dose given four hourly as required depending on the patient's response.
