Indication of Oroxine:
The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland located just below the larynx (voice box). It consists of two lobes that sit either side of the trachea (windpipe), joined by a central mass of tissue called the isthmus. The thyroid gland is responsible for the production and storage of the thyroid hormones, which regulate a) oxygen use and basal metabolic rate, b) cellular metabolism, and c) growth and development. Many diseases affect the thyroid gland, and Eutroxsig is a drug used as replacement for conditions such as thyroid deficient states, and in the treatment of thyroid tumours and inflammation of the thyroid gland.Action of Oroxine:
Eutroxsig is used as thyroid replacement therapy for the treatment of hypothyroidism. The principal pharmacological effect of thyroid hormones is to increase the metabolic rate of body tissues. Thyroid hormones are also involved in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. Thyroxine is the major component of normal secretions of the thyroid gland; therefore it is the essential determinant of normal thyroid function.Dose Advice of Oroxine:
Food impairs the absorption of thyroxine sodium, therefore it should be ingested in a fasting state, and can be taken as a single daily dose.Therapy with thyroxine sodium should initiated with low doses (e.g. 25 or 50micrograms/day). Thyroxine replacement therapy takes at least a month to reach steady-state levels. Therefore changes in dosage should be considered only every three to four weeks.
The recommended maintenance dose for adults is 100-150micrograms/day.
The recommended dosage for children with congenital or acquired hypothyroidism varies with age.
For children 0 to 6 months: approximately 8 micrograms/kg/day.
6 to 12 months: approximately 6 micrograms/kg/day.
1 to 5 years: approximately 5 micrograms/kg/day.
6 to 12 years: approximately 4 micrograms/kg/day.
12 years and over: 2 micrograms/kg/day.
The recommended dose for elderly patients is 75-125 micrograms/day.
