Indication of Famvir:
Famvir is used for the following viral infections:
- Cold sores: an infection, usually on the lips, caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. Symptoms include blistering of lips and/or mouth, with burning and pain. The first infection occurs earlier in life and becomes active again, causing recurrent outbreaks.
- Shingles: a condition caused by varicella zoster, a type of herpes virus that also causes chicken pox. Symptoms include a painful rash with burning and blisters. After the initial chicken pox infection, the virus becomes active again and causes shingles.
- Genital herpes: a viral infection, caused by herpes simplex 1 or 2, that is transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms include burning, tingling and itching, followed by blisters. These occur around the genital area.
Action of Famvir:
Famvir contains an active drug called famciclovir. Famciclovir is an antiviral medicine.Dose Advice of Famvir:
Immunocompetent patientsHerpes zoster
- 250 mg, three times daily, for 7 days.
- Treatment should be 250 mg, once daily, in patients with creatinine clearance 10-30 mL/min
Recurrent genital herpes
- 125 mg, twice daily, for 5 days. (Commence treatment during prodromal period or as soon as possible after the onset of lesions)
Suppression of recurrent genital herpes
- 250 mg, twice daily. Treatment should be 125 mg, twice daily in patients with creatinine clearance 10-30 mL/min.
Immunocompromised patients
Herpes zoster
- 500 mg, three times daily, for 10 days
- Treatment should be 250 mg, three times daily in patients with creatinine clearance 30-50 mL/min, and once daily in patients with creatinine clearance 10-29 mL/min
Recurrent HSV infections
- 500 mg, twice daily, for 7 days
Suppression of recurrent genital herpes
- 500 mg, twice daily
- Treatment should be 250 mg, twice daily in patients with creatinine clearance 30-50 mL/min, and 125 mg twice daily in patients with creatinine clearance 10-29 mL/min
Hepatic impairment
- dosage adjustment is not required in patients with well compensated liver impairment
Use in pregnancy
- ADEC Pregnancy Category B1. Use is not recommended in pregnant women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Use in lactation
- Use is not recommended in breastfeeding women unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Use in children
- Safety and efficacy have not been established in children.
Dose advice
- Treatment should be started as soon as possible after prodrome onset, or the appearance of a rash or lesions.
